Why You Should Care About Branding If You Are An Internet Marketer

Hey I’m back!

I don’t know if you missed me or not since the latest post I wrote (productivity hack: the lockdown method) was published a month ago but I’m finally back and getting my creativity juices ready to flow!

There’s a lot that can happen in 30 days so instead of telling you all my adventures so far, I’ll give you the most important things that happened…

  • I got interviewed by Aweber and earned $50 for my time with them (great people!)
  • The Marketing With Sergio blog is going under some heavy changes (I’ll explain below)
  • I’m changing something regarding Affiliate Marketing on this blog…
  • I’m finally writing a short book with a “twist” to give away
  • Including a video campaign as a “freebie” for branding
  • Why you should pass the marketing funnel of death as soon as possible
  • And I also have a few extra things to write about so keep on reading!

The AWeber Interview

I definitely root for the Aweber team and even though I know some people don’t feel the same about them, I have nothing against this company or their services, I just think they are great! AWeber Call

The interview was pretty simple, I just woke up one day, logged in to Aweber since I wanted to see some stats and I got this flying window displaying a message asking if I wanted to participate in an interview and given the fact that I rarely “win” anything, I just thought “why not?”, filled everything and carried on with my tasks for that day.

A couple of hours later in which by the way I was still sleepy I received a phone call, I couldn’t even identify somebody on the other end was speaking in English to me so I just said “I can’t understand you” a few times in Spanish (the reception was very bad) and then I heard a “oh I’m sorry” and then I immediately remembered about filling that form earlier and said “oh no no no no, wait it’s me, it’s Sergio Felix, who am I talking to?”

And then the interview was ON like Donkey Kong.

I got interviewed by Jessica Ivins an UX Designer & Researcher from the AWeber team.

We took it from the phone to a GoToWebinar call, spoke for about an hour (maybe a little bit more) they asked me so many things that I thought this interview would be AMAZING to share with anyone interested to know how I got started online, what am I doing right now, where I’m going, etc., the interview was simply incredible but I’m afraid I don’t have the recording (I didn’t ask for it either, I don’t want to put them in a position to say no and then both parties be all akward about it).

At some point I told Jessica I never thought I would be selected for this, she laughed and she said they had a ton of people apply from the USA (and probably the UK too) but they wanted more people from non-English speaking countries so apparently me being from Mexico was great for this!

Marketing With Sergio Changes

Even though I was quite happy with my News Theme from StudioPress I am going to start moving things around here.

News Theme

A year ago I moved from Thesis to Genesis and it seems like it’s time for me to really check out WooThemes now or maybe even build my own theme, I’m still not 100% sure what I’m going to do now but I know I do NOT want the News Theme anymore.

Now don’t get me wrong, it’s a fantastic theme but I just want to do something different!

For the changes I’ve done apart from changing the wordpress framework, I removed the Resources page and also the Start Here page.

I did this for two reasons:

1. When I got started I didn’t know what services to use, I didn’t even know what the heck was needed to become an Internet Marketer so whenever I downloaded a book that mentioned the required services, software, etc., I actually treasured that information and actually took action upon it.

Now everybody just takes for granted what’s inside your resources page…

“I have that, ooh I don’t have that, I don’t have an idea what’s that, oh I hate that” etc, etc so I’m not going to have that online anymore.

Note: I am NOT saying you should remove it from your website, I am just doing an experiment here and you should keep your resources and start here pages in place!

2. I opted to remove the Start Here page for a few reasons…

First of all, it wasn’t anything ground breaking, it was just a collection of old posts (but still relevant) from the blog, that were sorted out in a step by step order and that was it.

The second reason is that anybody can see on plain sight what you’re doing and what you are all about and honestly I’m not comfortable sharing that much anymore because let’s face it, there are two kind of persons in Internet Marketing, sellers and buyers.

Sure, sometimes we wear the buyer’s hat and sometimes we wear the seller’s hat but do you know who your prospects are?

Do you know who are you selling to?

I don’t want to be giving away all the things I actually tested myself that actually costed me a lot of money, time and efforts.

If somebody is going to wave their flag promoting stuff based on my research at least I’m going to make them go through my e-mail funnel first.

Writing My “Zero Affiliate Links” Marketing Book For Newbies

I just realized my information on wordpress (or on anything) may be worth pennies for an internet marketer but it could actually be worth a few thousands for a person that doesn’t even knows what wordpress is!

And no, I’m not having a “I’m not worth it” a lá Wayne’s World kind of event LOL

I’m just saying that we (that means both of us) should be actually be marketing to the right people and chances are, you probably already knew this before I did.

So in summary, no more start here page or resources page, I’ll write a good book that shares my story in more detail and it’ll be so Sergio Felix based that you’ll have to ask me for the programs I’m using.

At least that is going to be my (probably dumbest) new strategy with Affiliate Marketing.

Creating A Video Campaign

Creating a video campaign is a direct result of removing those pages on my blog.

Video has an unfair advantage over written information simply because we are audiovisual people (doh!) so I’m going to use video as much as I possibly can around here.

Talk about a welcome video on the sidebar, another video for my About Me page and a TON of videos for my e-mail based video campaign.

This is the current welcome video on my YouTube channel which I’m updating very soon.

I normally attend one webinar a day but I’m highly selective on choosing my webinars and which ones to flee from (even if they are fantastic speakers) if the subject is not something that interests me and you’re not interesting on the webinar itself chances are, you are going to lose me in just a couple of minutes.

Anyway, I told you this just so you know I have to process huge amounts of information PER DAY but I finally found a way to be selective about what to process and what to discard.

In a nutshell (and not doing any name dropping) I learnt on a recent webinar that it’s easier to sell a $10,000 product to ONE PERSON, than it is to sell a $1 product to TEN THOUSAND DIFFERENT PERSONS!

I actually had a wordpress client that paid me $1,500 for a site that you could build in just one afternoon.

So think about this…

Would you really want 31 different clients to be able to pull off the same exact $1,500 USD or just ONE wordpress consultation?

Why would you price this offer at $47 when it’s already converting at $1,500? (I’m asking you but I’m reinforcing this to myself)

Seriously, think about it.

You may have less buyers yes, but even four high ticket satisfied buyers spread during one month means $6,000 USD already on your bank account while four $47 clients a week (just imagine having to deal with 16 wordpress projects a month that would only mean $752 USD in return of investment and don’t forget the insane amount of work you would need to put in)

Do you feel me now?

Proper Branding In Place

So how the heck can you ramp it up to those high tickets?

Demand and positioning.

Demand means there’s a hungry market for your offer.

In my case, I’m marketing my Authority Blog Profits wordpress training mainly for marketers who do not quite understand WordPress like they should, I may not crush it but this upcoming training could be my lowest entry point at a later time, see?

And positioning, that’s exactly where the video based campaign shows up!

It’s easier to invest your hard earned money in someone you know, like and trust.

For a $4.95 product, I don’t care if your name is Mr. T but if you want to sell me a $10,000 training, you bet your ass I’m going to research you so much that I’ll even befriend your wife (or husband) on facebook just so I’m sure you’re the real deal and that (at least) you’re not going to run away with my money.

That’s the exact reason why branding is so important.

The video campaign can be really basic but also enjoyable to watch and seriously, anybody can do this (you can check out my first youtube video I was almost going through a panic attack there haha).

I think I’ll do a 7-day training course since 10 days starts sounding like “too much work” and 30 days may be a little too much to have in place for my funnel.

So the seven day video campaign is on, it will be monetized but in a really laid back kind of way: “if you want to buy through my links thank you, if you don’t that’s perfectly fine too!”

Right now I have 12 unused domains of which seven of them have my full name on and don’t worry, I’m not going to spread myself too thin, I already have a plan for these and I plan to make it public here as soon as they are ready for the masses! ;-)

The Marketing Funnel Of Death

Apparently everyone starts with $1 products.

Some other marketers start with $4.95 books or maybe $7 video trainings.

Then you can slowly start scalating to $17, $27, $37, $47, $67 and $97 price points.

Then maybe recurring payments (membership models) and lastly services or even personal coaching.

Another mentor of mine was saying he doesn’t understands what’s the point of having all of these low-priced products when you can just focus on high end clients and solve less problems.

Besides, dealing with a LOT of clients at $1 or $4.95 represents a lot more work and if you don’t believe me just ask anyone with products at those price points.

I’m not saying you should start your $5,000 coaching right now, I’m just saying that the sooner you pull out a $1 product, a $4.95 product,  etc., the sooner you’ll be on your way to where you want to be at and of course, I should be following my own advice and even though my training is done, I can’t write sales copy at all (believe me, I have tried a lot already) so that’s still on hold.

The Profit Funnel

To sum this up, before you even worry about traffic, your blog or anything else, you need a high converting front end offer and only then, you need to start worrying about driving traffic, tweaking your offer and at the same time, you can start creating your own blog and write about what you’re doing online.

We normally do it the other way around (build a blog first, write about our journey, drive traffic and then realize we need something to sell) but a front end offer is really easy to create if you know what you need to have in place of course.

Authority Blog Profits

I have failed in every possible way to release this wordpress training on time and I really can’t look at myself in the mirror right now.

I don’t even want to update you on this anymore since I hate to sound like a broken record!

I need to finish the sales letter, create a video for the sales page and create the affiliate graphics material, that’s it.

Well obviously, there are more things to learn and to tweak like include (maybe) a $1 trial or have a free offer in place to the first module, save the affiliate cookie so it gives proper commission if people upgrade, put back end offers in place, etc.

So it’s just something that has overwhelmed me like you have no idea but I’m working every single day on this.

Summary

I sent an e-mail broadcast today about sending a few offers for some days.

I am well aware that I started that list solely on sending Blog Updates mostly and that’s why I told my subscribers that they could unsubscribe if they didn’t like what I was going to send in advance, I like to keep things transparent so I wanted to be upfront about it just like I’m telling you what am I going to do with this blog.

Believe me, there are lots of great things coming up, I’ll be creating several spaces for you to get in touch with me via every single way I can think of:

  • webinars
  • google hangouts
  • spreecast live shows

And I think I’m going to put out a few basic products for newbies and sell them right here on this blog.

I happen to own Premise which is a membership site wordpress plugin meant for selling products on wordpress (without changing your main theme) created by the CopyBlogger guys and I never really used it before so I think this would be a perfect time to check it out on a real environment.

    Hi Sergio,

    I like this new blog look but I can’t agree that the post looks like a mess…it is very well laid out indeed.

    Also don’t worry about Authority Blog Profits taking so long…basically it is not the same animal as it was when you started it.

    If it was going to be a simple first product – the sort of product that most new marketers are told to bring out first – then I would have been worried that it is taking so long.

    But you have gone in right at the deep with a major training product so there is little wonder that it has taken you longer than you first thought it would.

      Hey Patrick, well I think the images are all over the place man so that’s why I think it looks bad but maybe I’m not used to see so many graphics on my posts, however I’ll take your compliment! ;-)

      Thank you for the feedback on creating ABP, I never though it would take me so much time to release it but I certainly learnt my lesson.

      For whatever I come up next with, I’ll lay out exactly what needs to be done and I’ll focus on getting it done as fast as possible without compromising the quality of course or under 30 days.

    Mind you, it is packed with info and so I take your word for it.

    Funny you would say that you are changing your theme because I like this one. I imagine you have though you see it every day, for most others they just come to your site when you have another post to write.

      Hey Dave, well you are right man, it’s actually 2538 words long.

      I always do a second read before publishing and I then add or remove stuff so it got even a bit longer than what I said on Facebook.

      Yeah I want to do something else with my theme, I think I already proved my point that anyone can have a great looking theme without knowing any code so it’s time to show a little bit my IT skills!

    You do seem to have a lot going man :-) I like the new blog look, it kind of makes me want to start again as I’m having nothing but issues with IE9 at the moment.

    I know your product is going to make some waves as well buddy so don’t you worry there. You have put a lot of time and effort into the product so don’t stop keep up the good work. I’m sure people will help you out with a promo or two

    Sales funnels are essential to create more revenue and add serious amounts to your backend. By just creating a $1 or $4.95 product with no funnel is crazy. I wish I took this advice when I first started.

      Hey Dan, yeah I really need to start making these changes already man.

      It’s funny that you mention it would be crazy to not use a proper funnel when launching a new product, I never really thought about it until I started seeing people offering 100% commissions with their launches.

      At first I was like WTF… are they really giving all the profits away?

      And only then I learnt that the actual real cash comes from back ends and not the front end offers.

    Holy shit, this is one of the most interesting post I’ve read since this year indeed Sergio. I can’t imaging how much time you put in writing it. And sure thing, i personally missed you a lot in fact, there was a day you crossed my mind and i said that i was going to contact you to ask you whats up, but i forgot.

    I share the same view with you on this post man, I’ve also discovered that most people normally value the higher priced products more than the lower ones, reason being that they general believes that the higher the price, the more important and useful the product.

    I think I’m going to imitate you on many things here my man, hope you wouldn’t mind? Haha. I’ve been thinking on removing those pages too but wasn’t convinced until now.

    And, kudos for the interview with Aweber, that’s so awesome.

    Thanks for sharing this one of a kind post Sergio, hope you won’t be away for so long again.

    BTW: Hope you will give me a review version of your product when its out, will write about it.

      Hey Theodore, yeah my man or would you just give away $10,000 USD just like that to somebody you barely know?

      About the psychology of pricing yes man, people don’t really care that much for a product they paid just a few bucks but here’s something really twisted, when I joined a $497 program from one of my mentors, would you believe he told me a few persons logged in a couple of times and never again?

      They didn’t refund or anything they just stopped logging in and the training was MASSIVE man so you can have procrastinators even at higher priced products, if you ask me, I think that’s insane.

      Well I did clarify that I wasn’t recommending to get rid of your start pages man lol I really think you should keep them in place but if you want to do the same, then go for it!

      I did make something close to $1,000 from those pages and that’s why I’m not recommending to remove them but like I said in the post, this is an experiment I’m doing.

    Getting a reputationable brand is important which will build your profile, and can boost your exposure online.

    -even if the brand is something like the “101 REPORT GUY”

    Nice to hear an update about your progress, I guess you have been busy working on your stuff for your products, which is great. Keep up the good work.

    Have you applied some of the stuff I gave in that other post? [Dominating The World: Plans For 2013]..

    Remember things always take longer than planned, but it will all be worthwhile in the end.

    Nice idea for the aweber interview, which will keep your readers at interest, especially the ones who use aweber.

      I’m still so humbled and honored from that reply you wrote on that post man and just now that I went over your recommendations, I already did a lot of things on that list!

      You are definitely SPOT ON that things are going to take a little longer than expected, I was frustrated because I made it public I was going to release my training in January and I failed for the second time since I first wanted to release this in December.

      It was a team of three persons in total interviewing me from AWeber (Brian and Mary) but I only spoke to Jessica and I still think it was completely awesome since I never saw it coming.

    Wow, Sergio – that was quite the post! LOL

    Congrats on the Aweber interview – I am curious though – did your list grow recently or they were just doing randoms? I got rid of them and am now with Getresponse and I actually like them – the reason was a personal choice. Not that Aweber did anything wrong, just needed a change, basically.

    Remember last year or the year before – time flies so fast I can’t remember, but didn’t we talk about you and our addiction to joining all these programs?? I stopped and you continued. Do you feel it was necessary to spend all that money to get to where you are today? Don’t they all teach you the same – just curious ;-)

    Maybe you just needed to hear it from a lot of different people before you took the step? I know what I need to know and I won’t be buying anything from anyone any time soon due to finances, so now is the time to TAKE ACTION!! Will you take action with me?

    I know you are working on a wordpress type of product – I am on a wordpress group and have received lots of knowledge and they are looking for wordpress stuff – ha! But, it’s not stuff I know just yet – well, that’s another topic and I guess I am rambling a bit….lol.

    I still gotta finish that book I started and I will!! Just fell into a deep hole and wow – today I woke up and it was like – yay I am back – ever been there?

    Just hope it continues..lol.

    We’ll have to hook up and discuss some things soon, ok!!

      Hey Linda, the thing I love about you is that you always have very interesting questions so here I come…

      I have a very small list of subscribers but I think they are quite responsive since it wasn’t built on freebies but on their own free will to be alerted whenever I published a new blog post.

      I keep joining programs but I don’t promote them anymore, my ultimate goal is to become an important coach (of some kind) and that’s why I need to keep myself updated.

      I stopped writing about it on the blog and promoting those because I got sick of the “you don’t need any more training” messages… I never needed any actual training of any kind, I hacked my way into all the things that I needed (I worked with computers for 23 years now) but every single time I decided to pay for access was to network with the product owners.

      That is something many will never understand and frankly speaking I already lost interest in explaining this any further, this is the main reason I’m already done with affiliate marketing and won’t be promoting anyone else again in a long time.

      Most of my e-mails and blog posts are meant to encourage others and and myself to keep ourselves accountable and to make things happen so in summary, yeah, I’ll take action with you Linda.

      I’ve been building my wordpress training for six months now so I’m not the fastest dude on earth to release products but if you’ve read my blog before, you definitely should know about it!

      It is normal for me to procrastinate one day and then work my ass off for a week so yeah I understand your situation too, just keep going, plan ahead and take action upon the things that bring results and you’ll get there very soon Linda.

    You are doing the right thing Sergio!! Not promoting everything you learned – I think it just creates confusion.

    That makes sense about getting in with the right crowd of people, that was a smart move :) Although I have my opinions about how you did it – but hey to each their own, right!!

    Time to just keep your blog as a learning curve – throw out good advice and how to’s here and there! I think that is what blogging is all about, in a way – guess it depends on your niche – but I love to help people and I know you do too!!

    I understand fully!! And you know I fully understand about procrastination – it’s so hard some days – but eventually we get’r done!!

    I’ve been wondering where the hell you’ve been, man. I’ve probably read your last post (the lockdown method) a dozen times or more, checking back to see if maybe I had missed a new post on your site.

    I started thinking maybe you and your fiancee’ had decided to chuck it all and elope.

    I can see you’ve been extremely busy, in the meantime.

    I’ve been worried about the theme on my blog for a long time, I even bought Thesis six months ago, but could never figure out how to install it, so it remains unused.

    I finally arrived at the conclusion that my current theme is workable, and have been concentrating on content and some other things.

    Glad to see you back, man and will definitely be looking forward to checking out your new product.

      Hey Steven, haha I’ve been around man and thanks for the good words, it has been really humbling for me to find out I was actually missed here!

      Focusing on your content instead of how your blog looks is actually one of the smartest things you can do blogging-wise.

      I made the awful mistake of being too picky with my theme in the beginning and lost a great deal of time picking the theme, then tweaking it, then picking another theme and tweaking it again and it was just ridiculous.

      Looks matter but if the content is not there and it’s not great, a good looking theme is not going to help us much.

      I think your theme looks very good, it’s clean and it’s easy to navigate but I would be doing you a dis-service if I didn’t tell you I have a post dedicated to installing Thesis version 1.8.x

    Wow Sergio, you have a lot of things going on and I what you’re doing is awesome. I am sure you’re going to have massive success. You’re absolutely right about the importance of branding and that we should focus on who we are online, so that when we launch something or we recommend a product, people will understand that it’s the real deal because they trust us.
